On a cold, windy day, Rye honored its veterans in front of a packed audience at the City Hall Council Chamber. About 125 people attended, including Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Rye Boxing Club members, and city officials.
Commander Fred de Barros from American Legion Post 128 led the ceremony. Robin Latimer opened the event with a beautiful performance of the national anthem. After everyone recited the pledge of allegiance, welcoming remarks were delivered by Mayor Cohn, U.S. Congressman George Latimer, and NYS Assemblyman Steve Otis. Each speaker expressed strong support for services for veterans.
Sabrina Murphy, CEO of the Rye YMCA, gave a keynote address highlighting the YMCA’s support for veterans after World War I and her work with US Navy families in Bath, Maine.
She described that under her leadership, the Rye YMCA continues to uphold that proud tradition of supporting our community, our service members and our veterans — stepping up, adapting, and serving where it’s needed most.
After a period of silence in honor of veterans, Robin Latimer guided the audience in the rendition of “God Bless America”.
Following the ceremony, over 60 attendees gathered at the Locust Ave Firehouse for a luncheon provided by Jerry’s. The lunch was filled with camaraderie and warm fellowship enjoyed by all.
Also at lunch, Rye American Legion Post 128 presented a check for $1000 to the Rye Boy Scouts to support their programs.
The City of Rye continues to show its appreciation and support of Rye veterans.
