The Rye Post conducted an Unserviceable Flag Ceremony on October 9, 2020 at the Rye Dept of Public Works facility. The event had been postponed previously due the Covid guidelines, but we were able to complete yesterday. Yesterday’s ceremony also follows postponement from earlier in the week due to high winds.
Commander Fred de Barros led the ceremony. He was assisted by Finance Office/Adjutant Tim Moynihan and Legionnaire Tom Seaver. We thank Tom for storing the flags for over a year in his garage!
We estimate over 300 flags were disposed of, including large city flags which flew at the tall flagpole at the WWI memorial in the center of town. The flags were respectfully disposed of in accordance with American Legion guidelines. For more on the ceremony and guidelines, check out this link: https://www.legion.org/flag/ceremony
The ceremony was filmed by RyeTV which will be posting a link of their video soon.
The Post would like to thank the Rye DPW, the Rye Fire Department and RyeTV for their assistance in the ceremony.
